On this day in 1995 Widnes met Warrington in the traditional Good Friday derby.

A souvenir programme, with a cover featuring memorabilia from Mike Flynn’s collection, was produced because it was due to be the last game at the old Naughton Park before work started on the new stadium (though that was delayed as things transpired).

But it almost became an even bigger landmark because plans were announced just days earlier for the Widnes and Warrington clubs to merge. That didn’t happen either, with both clubs promised stand-alone places in the new Super League. Until THAT decision was reversed and the Chemics found themselves outside of the top flight.
